Control Resonant Timeline: Seven Years After Control

Control Resonant is set seven years after the first Control. This spoiler-controlled timeline explains Dylan, Jesse, the Hiss and the Manhattan crisis.

Last reviewed July 25, 2026

Quick answer

CONTROL Resonant takes place seven years after the events of the first Control. Dylan Faden becomes the playable lead as the Hiss escapes the Oldest House and Manhattan falls into a new paranatural crisis.

What changed during the gap

Dylan spent years confined by the Federal Bureau of Control. Jesse became Director after the first game’s events, but she is missing during Resonant and remains a major non-playable character. The FBC that once contained the crisis inside its headquarters now operates from a field office in the city.

The Hiss has spread beyond the Oldest House, while the Mold and other paranatural threats also overwhelm Manhattan. Architecture and gravity fracture across distinct zones. The sequel’s opening follows Dylan leaving confinement, receiving the Aberrant, contacting Zoe and moving into the crisis.

What the timeline does not reveal

The seven-year statement anchors chronology; it does not provide a complete account of every event between games or explain Jesse’s disappearance. Those are story questions the campaign must answer. The game is designed as a new entry point, so understanding every Control document is not a stated requirement.

Use do you need to play Control first? for the newcomer answer. The opening sequence covers the first previewed events, while Dylan and Jesse have spoiler-controlled role pages. The Hiss and Mold overview tracks only threats confirmed for the sequel.
