Do You Need to Play the First Control Before Resonant?

Short answer: no. Here's how Control Resonant works as a standalone story, and what returning players will get that newcomers won't.

Last reviewed June 25, 2026

If you’re eyeing Control Resonant but never finished — or never started — the original, you can relax. Remedy has been clear that the sequel is built to welcome newcomers.

The short answer

No, you do not need to play the first Control. Resonant centers on a new protagonist, Dylan Faden, and tells a story designed to stand on its own. The studio has framed it as an entry point, not a continuation that punishes you for missing the setup.

What newcomers should know going in

A few concepts carry over and are worth holding in your head:

  • The Federal Bureau of Control (FBC) is a secret government agency that studies and contains paranatural phenomena.
  • The Hiss is a hostile, reality-corrupting force — the red, whispering threat from the first game.
  • Objects of Power and Altered Items are ordinary things warped into something dangerous and useful.

The game introduces what you actually need as you go, so you’re not expected to arrive with a lore degree.

What returning players get

Playing the original isn’t required, but it does add texture:

  • Dylan and Jesse’s relationship. Jesse was the first game’s hero; here she’s missing, and that absence lands harder if you know her.
  • Callbacks to the Oldest House and the Hiss invasion, which Resonant treats as recent history.
  • Connected-universe threads. Remedy links its games together, and the Control series brushes up against the studio’s other worlds — including Alan Wake’s. Fans will catch nods that newcomers can simply enjoy as atmosphere.

A practical recommendation

If you have the time and interest, the original Control (ideally with its two expansions) is a great game and deepens everything Resonant is doing. If you don’t, start with Resonant guilt-free. The sequel was made with exactly that choice in mind.
