Is Control Resonant a Loot-Grind RPG?

Control Resonant is a full action-RPG with deep builds, but official previews distinguish its customization from a conventional repetitive loot grind.

Last reviewed July 25, 2026

Quick answer

CONTROL Resonant is an action-RPG with extensive buildcrafting, but the published preview describes that depth as separated from the repetitive loot grind often associated with the genre. It is not presented as a loot-shooter.

Where customization comes from

Build variety comes from three deliberate systems: supernatural abilities earned from Resonant bosses, the Aberrant’s weapon forms and passive Talent branches. Artifacts add crafted passive equipment. These are authored progression choices rather than evidence of endlessly randomized weapon drops.

The game’s world follows the same philosophy. Remedy describes handcrafted Manhattan zones with encounters, lore, secrets, environmental challenges, hidden discoveries and narrative World Quests. The goal is exploration on the player’s terms, not clearing a map full of repetitive markers.

What the statement does not prove

The preview does not publish the entire reward economy. Enemies may drop resources, activities may award crafting materials and Artifacts may vary; none of that automatically turns the game into a live-service loot loop. Exact rarity systems and post-launch rewards should be documented from the retail build.

For players coming from the first game, the combat comparison explains the shift from third-person shooting to melee action-RPG systems. The Artifact guide covers the confirmed crafted passive layer, while the three buildcrafting pillars shows why active powers, weapon roles and Talents—not a pile of interchangeable guns—define the current build model.

Guides & Gameplay FAQ

Do I need to play the first Control?

No. Remedy presents Control Resonant as a standalone story and a new entry point centered on Dylan Faden. Playing Control provides more context for Jesse, Dylan, the FBC, and the Oldest House, but it is not required.

Instinct is the name used for Dylan’s paranatural ability system. These powers combine with movement and Aberrant attacks to shape how a build controls space, survives pressure, or damages enemies.
