Extend Aberrant Form: Ranged Chain-Staff Attacks

Extend is the whip-like chain-staff Secondary Form in Control Resonant, adding reach to a build and complementing close-range Primary Forms.

Last reviewed July 25, 2026

Quick answer

Extend is a whip-like chain staff that gives an Aberrant loadout more range. It belongs to the Secondary Form pool with Crush and Drill, and the Xbox Wire preview paired it with the close-range Slice axe.

Why Extend exists

Primary Forms establish Dylan’s regular melee sequence, but their reach and target coverage differ. Extend offers a separate ranged role on the secondary input. The media preview selected it specifically to complement Slice’s close single-target damage, demonstrating how the system lets one slot cover another slot’s limitation.

“For range” does not mean the Aberrant becomes a firearm. The published material still presents Control Resonant as a melee-led action RPG, and Extend is described as a physical chain-staff form. Its maximum reach, target count and pull behavior have not been published.

Loadout role

Extend may be attractive when a player wants to threaten an enemy without relying only on supernatural resources. Combat Abilities use a resource replenished through Aberrant hits, so a form that can connect from farther away could affect flow. However, the source does not confirm how much resource Extend restores or whether distant contact uses different rules.

The choice competes with Crush’s slow smash and Drill’s sustained directed damage. There is no verified universal winner; the stronger fit depends on the selected Primary Form and the encounter.

What remains unknown

Remedy has not shown Extend’s complete skill tree, charged inputs, aerial behavior or Combo Ender compatibility. Xbox Wire says other forms can eventually be unlocked, but no cost or mission requirement is available.

Treat current role descriptions as preview evidence rather than a finished tier list. See Slice for the demonstrated pairing, Crush and Drill for the competing secondary choices, and The Gap for the larger build structure.

Guides & Gameplay FAQ

Do I need to play the first Control?

No. Remedy presents Control Resonant as a standalone story and a new entry point centered on Dylan Faden. Playing Control provides more context for Jesse, Dylan, the FBC, and the Oldest House, but it is not required.

What are Instinct powers?

Instinct is the name used for Dylan’s paranatural ability system. These powers combine with movement and Aberrant attacks to shape how a build controls space, survives pressure, or damages enemies.
