The Gap in Control Resonant: Build System Guide

The Gap is Dylan's metaphysical build space for Combat Abilities, Aberrant Weapon Forms, Talents and artifact crafting.

Last reviewed July 18, 2026

Quick answer

The Gap is Control Resonant’s central build space, a dreamlike metaphysical area tied to Dylan Faden’s psyche. Players use it to shape Combat Abilities, configure Aberrant Weapon Forms, select Talents and craft Untapped Artifacts into usable Artifacts.

On PS5, Remedy says The Gap can be entered outside combat by pressing down on the directional pad. Equivalent inputs for other platforms will depend on their control mappings.

The three core build pillars

Supernatural Combat Abilities

Major bosses called Resonants grant unique abilities. Some bosses present branching choices that push Dylan toward different playstyles. These active abilities consume a resource that melee attacks help restore.

Aberrant Weapon Forms

The shapeshifting melee weapon is divided into Primary Forms, Secondary Forms and Combo Enders. A build can mix speed, reach, impact and combat roles rather than relying on a single weapon.

Talents

Talents strengthen the connections between abilities and melee attacks. They are part of the specialization system, and new nodes become available in New Game Plus.

Artifact crafting

The Gap is also where Untapped Artifacts found in Manhattan become equippable Artifacts. These passive modifiers can affect combat, survival, exploration and resources. They sit alongside—not inside—the three pillars described in Remedy’s combat overview.

Can everything be unlocked in one run?

No. Remedy intentionally prevents a first playthrough from unlocking the entire arsenal. Branching boss choices and limited progression give each version of Dylan an identity. New Game Plus expands combinations, adds talent nodes and allows multiple abilities from the same boss to be equipped.

Why the system matters

The Gap connects every layer of buildcraft rather than treating weapons, powers and passives as separate menus. A strong setup should align the Aberrant’s range and tempo, Combat Ability effects, Talents, and Artifact trade-offs around one plan. See the combat momentum guide for how that plan plays out in a fight.

Guides & Gameplay FAQ

Do I need to play the first Control?

No. Remedy presents Control Resonant as a standalone story and a new entry point centered on Dylan Faden. Playing Control provides more context for Jesse, Dylan, the FBC, and the Oldest House, but it is not required.

What are Instinct powers?

Instinct is the name used for Dylan’s paranatural ability system. These powers combine with movement and Aberrant attacks to shape how a build controls space, survives pressure, or damages enemies.
