Resonant Boss Ability Choices: How Rewards Work
Resonant bosses grant new supernatural powers, sometimes through mutually exclusive choices that shape a first playthrough and reopen in New Game Plus.

Quick answer
Defeating a Resonant is the primary way Dylan gains a new Combat Ability. Some bosses offer branching rewards, and a first playthrough cannot unlock every option. New Game Plus later allows multiple different powers from the same boss to be equipped.
The verified reward structure
Remedy describes Resonants as powerful, story-integrated boss encounters rather than a separate optional loot tier. Each defeated Resonant grants its unique supernatural power, while some encounters present choices aimed at different playstyles.
The opening media demo provides a concrete example. After defeating the shown Resonant Entity, the player chose Barrage, Seekers or Shield. Those options represented direct ranged damage, an autonomous explosive summon and a defensive barrier with an offensive dash.
Are rejected abilities lost forever?
They are deliberately exclusive during the initial run, but official coverage does not say the entire save can never access them. New Game Plus is designed to expand the decision space. Remedy confirms that players can equip multiple different Combat Abilities originating from the same boss in that mode.
The exact method for obtaining a previously rejected branch has not been documented. It would be premature to claim that a particular boss must simply be defeated again or that every choice appears at the same point.
How to make a first-run choice
Before launch balance data exists, choose a missing combat role rather than following a “best power” headline. Barrage supplies controlled range, Seekers add independent pressure, and Shield mixes protection with movement. Later bosses may offer different categories.
Also consider the Aberrant setup and talents. Melee restores ability resource, so even a power-heavy build must connect weapon attacks. The three ability slots guide covers active capacity, while New Game Plus explains the replay systems that widen build combinations.
