Shield Combat Ability: Defense & Offensive Dash
Shield surrounds Dylan with floating rocks and can become an offensive ram when he dashes into enemies in Control Resonant.

Quick answer
Shield is both defensive and offensive. It raises a barrier of floating rocks around Dylan, and the hands-on preview says the barrier can ram enemies when Dylan dashes into them.
Confirmed behavior
Shield was shown as one of three powers offered after a Resonant boss. Its identity differs from a passive block: the barrier can be converted into forward pressure through movement. This supports Control Resonant’s wider design goal of rewarding aggression rather than treating defense as a pause.
The official coverage does not state damage reduction, duration, resource cost, parry timing or whether every projectile is stopped. It also does not confirm invulnerability during the offensive dash. Those fields need final-game testing.
Place in the combat loop
Combat Abilities consume a dedicated resource that Aberrant hits replenish. Shield may help Dylan approach or survive close-range pressure, but it cannot be described as permanently active. Once ability resource is spent, melee remains the confirmed way to rebuild it.
Its offensive dash can also change positioning. A player using Slice may value access to an enemy’s rear, while a short-range Flurry setup needs safe entry. These are logical use cases based on the published mechanics, not verified “best Shield builds.”
The first boss choice
The Summer Game Fest demo offered Shield beside Barrage and Seekers. Barrage provides direct ranged projectiles; Seekers create an autonomous attacker that can be thrown and detonated. The first run does not grant every boss choice at once.
New Game Plus changes that restriction by allowing multiple abilities from the same boss to be equipped. Until exact upgrades are published, compare the Barrage page, Seekers page and three-slot ability loadout instead of relying on a speculative tier list.
