Control Resonant Has Three Combat Ability Slots

Dylan can eventually equip three Combat Abilities at once; understand how the three-slot loadout differs between a first run and New Game Plus.

Last reviewed July 25, 2026

Quick answer

Dylan can eventually have three supernatural Combat Abilities equipped at the same time. They sit beside the three-part Aberrant setup, giving a developed loadout six attack or ability inputs before talents, Artifacts and upgrades are counted.

What the preview confirms

Xbox Wire moved from the opening sequence to a later save where Dylan had a fuller suite of powers. Its report explicitly says three Combat Abilities can be equipped at any given moment. The preview frames these beside a Primary Form, Secondary Form and Combo Ender for the Aberrant.

Three slots do not mean the first boss immediately grants three powers. The early demo ended with a choice between Barrage, Seekers and Shield. Boss decisions accumulate as Dylan defeats more Resonants and expands his supernatural arsenal.

First-run restrictions

Some Resonants offer branching abilities, and the game is designed so every option cannot be unlocked in a single initial playthrough. A slot count and an unlock count are therefore different questions: Dylan may have room for three active abilities while still lacking alternate rewards rejected earlier.

This structure makes loadout selection about roles. A setup might combine direct damage, defense and a summon, or specialize more heavily. Exact boss lists and ability trees are not public.

What New Game Plus changes

Remedy says New Game Plus allows multiple different Combat Abilities from the same boss to be equipped. Unlocked supernatural abilities carry over, and the replay introduces combinations unavailable on a first run. Traversal abilities remain story-gated and do not follow the same rule.

The official explanation does not announce more than three active slots, so the safe reading is that New Game Plus expands the eligible combinations, not the published slot count. See Combat Abilities, New Game Plus carryover and The Gap for the surrounding progression systems.

Guides & Gameplay FAQ

Do I need to play the first Control?

No. Remedy presents Control Resonant as a standalone story and a new entry point centered on Dylan Faden. Playing Control provides more context for Jesse, Dylan, the FBC, and the Oldest House, but it is not required.

Instinct is the name used for Dylan’s paranatural ability system. These powers combine with movement and Aberrant attacks to shape how a build controls space, survives pressure, or damages enemies.
