Handcrafted Manhattan Zones: Design & Exploration

Control Resonant uses distinct handcrafted Manhattan zones rather than one seamless open world. Learn how hubs, variety and optional content fit together.

Last reviewed July 25, 2026

Quick answer

CONTROL Resonant divides Manhattan into major handcrafted zones with distinct atmosphere, encounters, lore and secrets. They connect through an evolving FBC field-office hub instead of forming one seamless open world.

Why the zones are separate

Paranatural forces affect each part of the city differently. Remedy uses that division to create stronger visual and mechanical variety than a single continuous space could provide. The structure also avoids a map designed around repetitive clearing or excessive markers.

The known FBC field office acts as a central area from which major zones branch. West Incursion Zone is an identified early area, and Evacuation Zone appeared as an open combat arena in the media build. Those examples prove more than one environment type, but they do not reveal the final zone count.

Exploration inside a zone

Each area can contain campaign objectives, World Quests, combat encounters, environmental challenges, hidden discoveries, lore, secrets and optional activities. “Handcrafted” describes authored density and identity; it does not mean every zone is linear or that backtracking is absent.

See is it open world? for the direct format answer and the Manhattan map guide for known spatial facts. The FBC field office page explains the evolving hub, while optional activities separates non-quest exploration from the two narrative quest types.

Do I need to play the first Control?
